Comcast and Diamond Sports Reach New Carriage Deal

In a significant development for sports enthusiasts, Comcast and Diamond Sports Group have reached a new carriage agreement, bringing relief to a substantial number of fans who have endured a months-long blackout of Bally Sports channels. The resolution allows Comcast customers, especially those subscribing to the "Ultimate TV" package, to resume watching their favorite local teams as early as August.

"Entering a new carriage agreement with Comcast, our third largest distributor, is a critical step forward in our restructuring effort, and we are pleased that fans will again be able to access broadcasts of their local teams through Xfinity," stated David Preschlack, CEO of Diamond Sports Group.

This deal marks a turning point for Diamond Sports Group, which has undergone a turbulent period, navigating bankruptcy proceedings under Chapter 11 for the past 16 months. The company's recent difficulties came to a head when they pulled their channels off the air at the start of May, affecting the visibility of various regional sports.

Reinstating Access to Local Sports

Comcast’s strong presence in key markets such as Atlanta, Minnesota, Detroit, Kansas City, Tampa Bay, and Miami makes this agreement particularly impactful. Fans in these regions will once again have the opportunity to enjoy live, local games from MLB, NBA, and NHL teams. The reinstated access comes at a critical time as the baseball season continues and in preparation for the upcoming basketball and hockey seasons.

Subscribers who choose the "Ultimate TV" package are in for an added benefit: a free three-month trial period, after which the package will cost an additional $20 per month. This package is designed to provide comprehensive sports coverage, ensuring fans don't miss a moment of their local teams in action.

Enhanced Viewing Options for Fans

Diamond Sports Group, which owns 15 regional sports networks under the Bally Sports banner, provides various viewing options to cater to different preferences. For instance, Bally Sports' streaming app offers an in-market solution for Marlins, Rays, Royals, and Tigers fans, while Braves and Twins supporters will need to use the broadcast channels for local game coverage.

With the August 30 deadline for Xfinity customers to upgrade to the "Ultimate TV" package fast approaching, fans are encouraged to make timely decisions to maximize their sports viewing experience.

Strategic Moves Amid Bankruptcy

As Diamond Sports Group strives to emerge from bankruptcy, finalizing agreements with the NHL and NBA remains a top priority. "With certainty on our distribution, we are focused on finalizing an agreement with the NHL and resolving our ongoing negotiations with the NBA," Preschlack emphasized.

Moreover, the company plans to present a reorganization plan to the court following successful agreements with team and league partners, pointing to a strategy that prioritizes stability and continuity of service for fans. "We are mindful that time is of the essence with basketball and hockey seasons fast approaching, and once agreements with our team and league partners are complete, we intend to move expeditiously to present a plan of reorganization to the court," said Preschlack.

Currently, Diamond Sports Group holds the linear rights to broadcast games for 12 Major League Baseball teams, underscoring its relevance and influence in the sports broadcasting landscape. The new agreement with Comcast not only re-establishes access for fans but also represents a vital step in Diamond Sports’ restructuring efforts amid their financial recovery journey.
