Los Angeles Lakers Overhaul Coaching Staff: JJ Redick Takes the Helm

In a move that has captured the attention of basketball enthusiasts and analysts alike, the Los Angeles Lakers have completely overhauled their coaching staff this summer. The most significant change sees former NBA player and sports media star JJ Redick appointed as the new head coach, replacing Darvin Ham.

Redick, who has no prior coaching experience, transitions to this role after a celebrated playing career and a promising stint in sports media. Despite his lack of coaching history, Redick's deep understanding of the game and his cerebral approach to basketball offer a fresh perspective for the storied franchise.

"We wanted to kind of think a different way," said Lakers' president Jeanie Buss. "Really, he's got a vision. I'm not comfortable talking about the basketball stuff, but we were looking for a candidate that would bring something different and really invest in developing young players. JJ is the right person for us."

To support Redick in his new role, the Lakers have enlisted a trio of veteran assistants: Scotty Brooks, Nate McMillan, and Lindsey Harding. This experienced bench aims to provide the guidance and support necessary for Redick's smooth transition from player to head coach.

"I'm really impressed with his staff," Buss added. "The coaching staff with Nate McMillan and Scotty Brooks, there's a lot of experience that will be there for him to make that adjustment to being a head coach."

Redick's predecessor, Darvin Ham, led the Lakers to notable statistics. Under Ham, the Lakers were fourth in post-up possessions per game last season (7.3), 28th in 3-point attempts per game (31.4), and 29th in offensive rebounding rate (24.4). The team finished 15th in offensive rating with 115.4.

Recognizing the areas in need of improvement, Redick has laid out clear plans for the upcoming season. His strategy includes increasing the team's 3-point attempts, enhancing offensive rebounding, and implementing more organized offensive sets.

"I'm going to use math," said Redick, signaling a data-driven approach to enhancing the team’s performance. Redick also emphasizes the creation of a positive team culture and strong player development as cornerstones of his coaching ethos.

"The pursuit of greatness can't be miserable. Every day that somebody walks in this building, they have to enjoy it. I think part of being a coach, right, is, like, 'Can I maximize each player?' That helps maximize the group. And does everybody in the building, not just the players and staff, does everybody in the building enjoy coming to work every day? That's sort of on me to create that culture," he explained.

As the Lakers prepare for the new season, the infusion of fresh ideas and a revamped coaching staff brings a renewed sense of optimism. While the appointment of Redick as head coach marks a bold departure from conventional choices, it holds the promise of innovative strategies and a rejuvenated team spirit. With the backing of seasoned assistants and a clear vision, Redick is poised to make a significant impact on the Lakers’ journey ahead.
