In a bid to beef up their defense and enhance their impact on the field, the Cleveland Browns’ front office made resolute efforts during the offseason to maintain core defensive linemen Za'Darius Smith, Shelby Harris, and Maurice Hurst. These strategic moves underscore the Browns’ commitment to building a more formidable defense.
Taking their defense to the next level, the prowess of the Browns was further strengthened by selecting Michael Hall Jr. in the 2024 NFL Draft. Hall, an Ohio State standout and Cleveland native, was chosen 54th overall, symbolizing a substantial investment in homegrown talent.
Hall’s tenure with the Buckeyes was marked by impressive performance, recording 6.0 sacks with 1.5 in his final year. This kind of defensive prowess hasn’t gone unnoticed, especially by seasoned teammates. Za'Darius Smith drew comparisons between Hall and the legendary Aaron Donald, who concluded his illustrious career with 111.0 sacks, 24 forced fumbles, and seven fumble recoveries.
"He is different. He reminds me of Aaron Donald a little bit," Smith remarked with optimism. "Hopefully he doesn't see this and get a big head. He just wants to learn. He is asking a lot of questions. If you did see during 1-on-1s, he was winning each and every rep. To have a young guy like that that just wants to continue to get better and better each and every day is big by a defensive lineman and we are happy to have him."
Highlighting Hall’s commitment and drive, Smith added, "Being with him, man, hopefully there is a package that Jim Schwartz puts in for us where all of us are in at the same time. [Hall is a] young guy, just wants to learn. He wants to be great. He is from here. He was born and raised in Cleveland so for him to be a Brown is big, too. I think last week he told me 'I got a lot of doubters and I am going to prove a lot of guys wrong.' That was big to hear that from him as a young guy."
Hall’s work ethic has been apparent from the start, with the young lineman expressing gratitude and determination. "There hasn't really been a toughest adjustment. My work ethic from before has been great. I just turned it up a notch plus-2. Staying after and getting extra work with those guys, Myles [Garrett] or Za'Darius and all them or Mo Hurst. Just being blessed to be out there with all of them," Hall articulated.
Conducted under the stewardship of defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, the Browns’ defense was among the NFL’s elite last season. This success has no doubt played a role in attracting and retaining talent, including offseason acquisitions like Quinton Jefferson, seventh-round draft pick Jowon Briggs, Dalvin Tomlinson, and 2023 third-round selection Siaki Ika. These additions were aimed at bolstering depth and versatility along the defensive front.
Looking forward, the Browns are set to open their preseason at home against the Packers, marking the beginning of a new chapter buoyed by their promising 11-6 record in the previous season. However, the team will undoubtedly be looking to push beyond the wild card round elimination they faced against the Texans last postseason.
As the Browns gear up for the new season, the amalgamation of veteran experience and youthful eagerness holds promising potential for their defensive unit. Michael Hall Jr.’s seamless integration into this lineup exemplifies the Browns' forward-thinking strategy, ensuring that the defensive strength remains a significant talking point as they navigate the challenges of the upcoming NFL season.
With Hall and his seasoned counterparts on the front lines, the Browns’ defense could very well be a force to be reckoned with, reflecting the collective ambition of the team to achieve and exceed their past performances.
