Philadelphia's fervent football culture was on full display as more than 50,000 fans filled Lincoln Financial Field for the Eagles' open practice. The intensity of the event struck Saquon Barkley, who walked out of the home tunnel for the first time, having only previously emerged from the visitor's side during his days with Penn State and later with the New York Giants.
Barkley, who is now part of the Eagles' roster, couldn't help but draw comparisons between the atmosphere at Lincoln Financial Field and his collegiate experience at Beaver Stadium. "I tell these guys it's like college. If you think about it, when you leave college -- the NFL is on another level with the stadiums and the vibe. You never really get that college feeling, but you get that here," Barkley said. "When I was in college, you didn't want anyone to come into Beaver Stadium and get a win there. You get that feel here. You know how much every week means when you play at the Linc."
This sentiment was shared by another player, Trevor Keegan, who was also captivated by the energy and support from the Philadelphia fans. "It was awesome. I remember walking out there, and they're introducing all the guys, I'm like 'Holy shit, this is so cool,'" Keegan recalled. "It was louder than Michigan Stadium with those 50,000 people. It was rocking."
A City United by Sports
Philadelphia is known for its ardent and loyal sports fans, and this open practice was a testament to that passion. Barkley marveled at the love and enthusiasm the city holds not only for the Eagles but for all its sports teams. "I already knew how much love this city has, not just for this team, but all the teams around here. But for a practice to have 50,000 fans is truly insane," he remarked. "It's big. It helps us as a team. It kind of gives me that college feel again."
The sense of unity and communal support is a significant part of what makes playing in Philadelphia such a unique experience. Keegan described the infectious zeal that radiates from the fans, "You just hear about it every day how passionate the fans are for this team and the rest of the sports teams. It's awesome."
An Electrifying Season Ahead
The overwhelming support from the fans has not only elevated the atmosphere but has also heightened the excitement and motivation for the players as they prepare for the upcoming season. "I'm excited to go out there and play for those guys, to play for this fanbase. Every week I'm gonna try to give them 100 percent and try to compete at a high level," Barkley pledged.
Keegan echoed this excitement, describing the goosebumps he felt from the raucous reception. "You can feel it from the fans. I got goosebumps. It was so cool. I was so excited, and I'm excited for the season," he said.
A Return to Glory Days
For many players, the electrifying environment at Lincoln Financial Field is reminiscent of their collegiate glory days. The roaring crowds, the shared sense of anticipation, and the dedication of the fans create a unique experience that few NFL stadiums can replicate. "Blue collar, hard-working people that sports bring all together. It's one of the coolest things," Keegan reflected.
Philadelphia's fans have set the stage for what promises to be an exhilarating season. With the unwavering support of over 50,000 fans even at a practice session, the players are more motivated than ever to give their all on the field. The unity and spirit fostered by this passionate fanbase are sure to drive the Eagles as they aim for excellence this season.
